The first step is to think about what items in your life might be holding you back:

Sentimental Value Objects: If you have something that once belonged to someone else, or holds a special place in your heart, these can be very difficult to let go of. But ask yourself a question: Do you actually ever use the item? If you use the item on a regular basis, then of course it is something worth considering to keep. But if you never use it, chances are it is time to let go of it.

Unjustifiable Emotional Value: Some items don’t have much physical use in your life, but they have an emotional value. Pride and Desire can sometimes affect our judgement on whether an item is really actually necessary in our lives. If you’ve always wanted for example something luxurious, you might not want to give up that item, even if it really does not add luxury to your life, but makes you feel the same way you would feel as if it did.

Fear of Without: Many people are afraid to get rid of items, because they worry what will happen if they don’t have it anymore. For example, maybe you have a kitchen gadget you never use, and is always just sitting there in your pantry closet taking up space. You don’t use it, but you’re afraid that some day you might need it, and you won’t have it. Maybe you are afraid that the item cannot be replaced with anything else.

Lack of Fulfillment: Some people own a lot of stuff because their lives are missing something, so they keep buying more things and adding more things to their collection. For example, maybe you have a well paying job, but it doesn’t make you happy. You might instead find yourself buying more clothes and fashion accessories than you can actually wear because it makes you feel happy when you buy things.

If these things are holding you back, here are some tips for letting go:

1. Separate Emotion From Material Objects: Some people will have a very difficult time in doing this, but it’s an important step to take. At some point, you need to accept that all objects in your life are nothing but objects. They do not have feelings, they do not contribute meaning in your life.

2. Seek Fulfillment in Other Ways: If you are accumulating things because you are missing something in your life, find an alternative. Maybe you need more friends or human interaction for example – instead of going shopping, join a book club or find others that share a common hobby with you.

3. Imagine the worst case scenario: Imagine everything you own is destroyed by a natural disaster one day. It no longer exists. Does the world end? Of course not. Learn to appreciate the positive things in your life, and the things that do not take up space. Your health, your family, your friends, your unique experiences – these are things that have meaning in life.

4. Memory Keep Creatively: You can do a number of things to keep memories preserved, but will make it easier to let go. For example, you could take photographs of something or you could transform clutter into art or preserve it in a scrapbook instead.

You don’t have to be tied down to your belongings. Don’t let your material possessions own you. By letting go, you will find it makes for all the difference in your life.

Designed to be eco-friendly, they are much flatter than traditional plastic hangers, so do help cut down on space quite a bit. As with most eco-friendly items, they are slightly more expensive (averaging out to about $1.50 each hanger), but they were too cool not to list here. Wait, What About the Cascading Hangers As Seen on TV?

If you have seen the commercials for the cascading hangers on TV, where it is a single hook that folds up and down that holds all of your hangers, you might be wondering why we haven’t listed those here. Well, sadly, they just don’t deliver to their promise. We’ve looked at a number of brands and other similar designs, and can’t seem to find a single one that works well at keeping clothes unwrinkled and still save space. Most of the reviewers have complained that within just 24 hours of using them their clothes have all landed on the floor. Others said that what happened is that their clothes would end up in a big bunch at the bottom, which cleared space for the rack, but not actually usable space. So, we cannot recommend those at this time to anyone. We will keep our eyes open though, and if we can find a manufacturer who can make a hanger with the same functionality a little higher quality we will certainly add it to our reviews.

Here’s some of our favorite small space ideas to help you get organized:

Store the Right Sized Items in the closet: Big items should go in big closets, small items should go in small closets. Yet, for some reason, many people do not think this way. For example, closets that are not very deep at first may seem completely useless, but they actually are excellent for things such as bathroom toiletries, children’s toys and games, and even pantry storage for food. They may also be a good place at storing items such as a broom and dustpan. If you have a closet where you can’t even hang a coat hanger in it, make sure you are best utilizing it for items that fit into it.  So often I see people trying to shove large bulky blankets and towels into these small spaces when meanwhile in their bathroom closet it is like a cave trying to find a bar of soap.  Don’t be afraid to completely change the use of the closet if it better fits your stuff or your household needs!

Make Use of Vertical Space: Most closets are as high as your ceiling (if you have a short closet, see instead our article on under the stairs closet organization) – so you want to use that space all the way to the top! Depending on the closet shape and size, you may want to place tall items in the closet, such as long dresses or coats as well as brooms and vacuums and then use shelves at the top or bottom. Shelving rows from top to bottom can also help make it easier for you to utilize the space.

Add Some Flair: Just because the space is small, it doesn’t have to be boring! By painting the walls a nice light and airy color, such as light blue or green or a neutral tan, it will help make the closet appear larger. White can make the space seem more open, but it can often also make it seem dull. So don’t be afraid to use a little color! You can also paint the shelving or add some decorative elements to your containers. If your closet looks good, you won’t be thinking so much about how small it is, but how nice it appears!

When designing a closet, one of the things to pay attention to is lighting. Having the right amount of brightness and illumination can make a big difference not only in the over all look and feel of the closet, but also how easy it is to find items and keep everything organized.

Understanding Different types of Lights

There are a lot of different light types out there. The most popular choice of them all is to use LED bulbs. While LED bulbs are economical and generally brighter than other types of bulbs, they are not always very warm and they do not always cover a lot of area space. So if you are using these types, you will likely need several to get the right amount of brightness. It’s not unusual to need more than 5-10 depending on size of your area.

Incandescent lights are also popular, but they can be very dangerous in a closet environment. Like the picture shown, they usually are not very pretty looking either. These types of bulbs, which are sometimes considered to be older styles of lights, can get extremely hot, which in a closet can be extremely risky. Closets are filled with materials that could catch on fire very easily, whether they are clothing or old papers that are very dry. If you have incandescent bulbs in your closet, you should immediately replace them with fluorescent lights or LED lights. Flourescent bulbs are not expensive and require little effort to use – they are just like the incandescent in functionality.

Battery Powered: If you do not have electrical outlets or wiring available for your closet space area, then you might want to consider battery powered units, which can usually be installed with little to no effort at all. The downside is that batteries don’t last forever, and these units can sometimes be unreliable, especially those which are motion sensor. They are a good temporary solution but not always good for the long term. They also are not very bright, so you will likely need at least 4-5 of these for a closet to have ample lighting.

Track Lighting: For larger closet rooms or walk-in closets, track lighting with flourescent or LED bulbs is the recommended choice. These lights give you plenty of flexibility, as you can usually adjust the angle of the light and where it will reflect. They also give the space a nice aesthetic for design and appeal. They are more expensive and will require some electrical wiring knowledge to install, but it is well worth it and will increase the value of your closet significantly.

Now that we know about the different types of lights, how do we decide the right amount? Here are some general guidelines for how many lighting units to use:

Caluclate Square Footage: You’ll want to do some math to figure out the size of your closet, as well as check the lighting unit you choose to find out what size range of space it will cover. Some lights for example, may only shine a radius of 1 foot while others may light up the entire space, much like a lamp or overhead light in a room.

Determine How Much Brightness: If you are waking up in the morning swearing that the closet light hurts your eyes and it is making you grumpy, then you might want to choose less units or pick a unit with a low wattage. On the otherhand, if you’re looking through things with a flashlight and can never seem to see what you need, then you probably will need either a brighter unit or something with a broader range of coverage.

Think About Placement: You can place your lighting anywhere you want, but some places are much more practical than others. For example, you probably want to make sure you can see items on the floor, so you might choose something that goes lower on the wall or a below the cabinet type of light to make sure this area is easy to view. If you just want one large overhead lamp, you may wish to place it in the center of the ceiling. With track lighting kits, you should make sure you place it in a place where the heads can be pointed in the direction where you need the brightness.

Understanding Use: Obviously, if you are growing hydroponic plants in a closet, you would need more lights than say for lighting up your socks and old handbags. Many people use closets for a number of things, such as converting it into a craft room or an office area. If you are building a multi-functional closet, you will want to make sure that your needs are met.

George Bernard Shaw is famous for the saying, “If you can’t get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you’d best teach it to dance.”

While most people never actually have skeletons in their closets (at least I should hope that is the case!), it is a common figure of speech that many people use. “Skeletons” usually refers to things you do not really want others to know about or it sometimes also means something you’ve forgotten about. While you can keep things hidden away for so long, usually they will come out eventually – and it’s always best to do it in a way that is positive (such as dancing) then letting it be negative or overwhelming. In other words, there are many things you can do to take a weakness and turn it into a strength.

When it comes to organizing your closets, chances are you have a few “skeletons” both figuratively and literally in your closets. Here are some common items that many people seem to hang onto forever in their closets and how you can “make them dance”.

Common Skeleton #1: Old Photographs

Now that everything is digital these days, those old photographs don’t get much attention. But that doesn’t they should be in a closet collecting dust and taking up valuable storage space, either! Sometimes we hang onto photographs we don’t really need or want anymore.

How to Make Them Dance:
After sorting through the photos to decide which ones are keepers, we recommend scanning your old photos and converting into digital format. Be sure to make lots of backups of the photos on either an external hard drive or on an online storage service. You can never make too many backups!

Once the photos are safely digitally archived, you can then place them in albums in a book shelf for safe keeping, or see if any of your friends or family would be interested in the photographs. You may even be able to sell some of the very old or vintage photos or donate them to a local museum or library.

Common Closet Skeleton #2: Old Hobbies

Often times we start a hobby, only to lose interest or find ourselves doing something else with all of our time. Whether it’s sports, musical instruments, craft and sewing supplies, or something else, these items need to find their own special place or be donated.

How to Make Them Dance
Find someone who is doing the hobby and donate your items to that person. If you have items which are valuable, you can also list them for sale on sites like eBay. You may also be able to repurpose some of the items. For example, that old bowling ball could become a decorative yard ornament. If you still enjoy the hobby, then you need to find that hobby it’s own dedicated space! Nothing is worse than a hobby mixed in with say your clothes and cleaning supplies!

Whether it’s newborn baby outfits from your kids when they were younger, something that once belonged to a favorite relative or friend, or just the lucky t-shirt you wore for three years straight, or any other clothing that has special memories, it’s really hard to part with these clothes!

If the clothes do not fit you or you know you will never ever wear them again, there are a number of things you can do to turn them into something useful that will not waste valuable storage space. For example, an old t-shirt could be framed as a wall hanging. I have seen many people make beautiful quilts out of baby clothes. You could take photographs of the clothing items so to have a memory of them. There are endless possibilities for different things to do with these items!

Tips for Buying Wooden Hangers

When you are buying wooden hangers, it is important that you take into consideration these things:

Price: If you can afford more expensive brands that are more durable and sturdy, then of course. But, if you are like most people who just want to add the touch of class and to protect their clothing, finding ones that are just as good as any others for an affordable price is the way to go. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have the benefits of natural wood!

Quantity: The average small bedroom closet holds at least 30-50 hangers – a walk-in closet will have generally at least 100-200. It makes us laugh when we see only 5-6 wooden hangers in a package for sale. While you may only need them for a few small items, we’ve found that using durable heavy hangers seems to provide a bigger incentive for hanging up clothes and keeping the closet organized and tidy.

Use: We generally do not recommend hangers where you can fold pants over one half and hang a shirt on top. Not only does this increase the likelihood of clothes getting wrinkled in the closet, but it also often causes items to be lost or forgotten about, or you end up tearing the closet apart to get to the clothing item below.
