While a shoe closet may seem like an unneccessary item to some, for many people who simply have too many shoes or perhaps live in a household full of people with a lot of footwear, having a shoe closet makes perfectly good sense. Not only does designating one closet strictly to the things you wear on your feet help you find and easily locate your shoes, but it also will free up valuable closet space in other areas of your home as well.

Below are our tips for organizing or designing a shoe closet.

1. Assess the Situation: The first thing to do is to carefully assess the situation. Ask yourself a few basic questions to get started. How many pairs of shoes do you own that need storage space? What shoes are worn the most often? Are there any sizes that do not fit or are no longer in style? What different types of footwear do you have? Are some of them seasonal, for example multiple pairs of winter boots?

2. Discard Worn/Torn/Mismatched Pairs: Do you have shoes that are worn past the point of use? Are there ones that are terribly uncomfortable? Do you have different things that are missing their other half of the pair? While it may be heartbreaking to do so, you may want to get rid of anything that is not in good condition or you can’t find the match for. You can’t wear just one single shoe, so if you’ve lost one, there’s not a whole lot you can do.

3. Organize By Type: Since you’ll likely choose which pair to wear based on your activities planned or what kind of place you are going to, it makes the most sense to organize by type and how you plan on using each pair. For example, you’ll want to separate sandals, high heels, tennis shoes, boots, and others to help make it easy to find them as needed. If you’ll be organizing a closet that holds the items of more than one person, you’ll also want to make sure you designate a space for each individual who will be using the space,

4. Choose Your Storage Method: There are multiple storage options available. From stacking them in neat containers to hanging them on racks or lining them neatly along shelves, it’s best to choose something you are comfortable with using. It won’t do you any good if you can’t stand the system you designed for storing all of the items. You may also want to consider sliding drawers, as this can help make it easier to find things hiding in the back of the shelves in older homes. Some people have found that slanted shelves make it easy to find exactly what you are looking for.

5. Keep Items Visible: If you place shoes in closed boxes, it is likely you will forget what they are or that you even have them. If you stack items behind other items it will also be more difficult in staying organized and clutter free. If you want to keep items in boxes, choose clear containers or make sure they are well labeled, even possibly with a picture.

6. Consider Convenience: It is likely you have pairs that you wear on a regular basis. These should be stored in an easy to reach spot so it is convenient to find them. You may want to use organizers that go on the floor for these items. Be sure you limit your convenience shoes to only a few pairs per person, otherwise you may find yourself constantly tripping over a jumbled mess.

7. Don’t Forget the Lighting: Good closet lighting will make it much easier for you to be able to find exactly what you want, when you want it. You’ll be able to tell the difference between a black and dark navy blue pair as well with proper lighting. You can have lighting installed by a qualified electrictan, or take advantage of the many battery operated lights that are easy to install anywhere without worry about wires.

A shoe closet can be a great way to keep track of your collection, as well as free up other closets for your different items such as your clothing and more. Following these tips will help you make sure that the design you pick and the method for organizing all of your favorite pairs of shoes will work the best for you.

Organizing clothes is simple with our 5 easy steps.
Post from: Closet Organization Tips

Deciding how to organize your clothes may seem a little daunting at first, but there are actually quite simple things you can do to reduce clutter in your closet as well as make more space for other items.

Everyone will have a unique system that works better for them. Not everyone has the patience to color coordinate their clothing or store things by the season. However, doing this can greatly help you be more organized. But, if you can’t stick to a certain routine or system, then no matter how good of a method it may be, it’s not going to work as the best choice for you.

There are a lot of different ideas for things you can do to reduce clutter and help your organize your clothes better. While doing all of these things will give you some very good closet space, we also understand that not everyone is an organized neat freak with the patience and detemination to keep things carefully arranged and defined for a certain space.

Here are some ideas for organizing clothes:

1. Get Rid of the Stuff You Don’t Wear: Why we keep clothes we don’t wear is a question many people have often asked but few have actually determined an answer for. Chances are in your closet you have several items you have only worn once or twice in the past year, if you’ve worn them at all. Ask yourself why you are really keeping something, how often you have worn it in the past, and if you’re going to wear it anytime in the next three months. If you don’t plan on wearing something anytime soon, then there’s a good chance you don’t need it. While it is always a good idea to hang onto two or three formal outfits, chances are you don’t need a closet full of evening gowns or tuxedos. The more you can get rid of, the easier it will be to find the clothes you DO actually wear, as well as keep the space neat and organized.

2. Sort it Seasonally: Unless you are lucky enough to live somewhere that maintains a constant temperature of 75 degrees year round, there’s a good chance that you’ll have some clothes you wear in winter, some in spring, some in fall, and some in summer. Obviously you won’t be wearing your wool sweaters on a 90 degree day, and its unlikely you would wear shorts when there’s a foot of snow on the ground. Having a system in place where seasonal items can be easily rotated can help many people be more organized. Clear storage containers or garment bags can help with this.

3. Choose Your Sorting Method: There are many different sorting methods. Some people like to keep all of their dresses and suits together, all of their polo shirts together, all of their slacks together, etc. Others may rather coordinate by outfit – for example keep matching clothes together. Another good method of sorting your clothing is to arrange it by color. Many people will find that a combination of different methods work best for them. For example, maybe you will sort by type of article of clothing, and then further arrange it by colors,

4. Use Smart Hangers: There are all types of hangers available. Some of them even function as a double hanging rod, to help maximize hanging space. Others fold down and allow you to hang multiples articles of clothing without taking up as much room as traditonal hangers. It is also worth mentioning that some hangers simply store certain types of clothes better than others. For example, pants hangers are much better for pants than regular ones since they help maintain the shape and form. Using smart hangers will help you in keeping things neatly hung on the closet bar and maximize the best possible use of the space.

5. Keep Accessories Organized: If you have a lot of accessories, such as belts, ties, scarves, or hats, you’ll want to make sure you also include a storage solution for those as well. Rotating tie or belt hangers can be great for fitting a large number of items in a small amount of space while making it easy for you to find what you need exactly without having to rummage through too much stuff. Hooks installed on the inside can also help in keeping these things organized. You may want to consider either an over the door shoe organizer or a purse organizer to help further increase the amount of space available inside the closet.

Storing your clothes are one of the reasons closets exist. By following some of our tips in organizing what you werar, not only will it be easier for you to get dressed in the morning, but you’ll also be able to find things easily and also have piece of mind in knowing you are doing the best that you can to take care of your clothes.
